Chat with Barry Jay - September 03, 2008

BarryHi All - Look busy. I'm here. Seriously though, we'll get started in couple of minutes. Barry if you guys would like to start posting some easy to answer questions...I'm good to go :-) Okay you can also ask me some tough questions too. Whatever's on your mind.

BootcamperMy main problem is just staying motivated! I did great getting ready for my trip, but now that I am back, I am back to my old lazy habits. P.s. I love the community pages and reading the posts/comments each day!

BarryWe all struggle with motivation some days it's all about contrary action. You'll always be glad you worked out and you'll always regret not working out...results are motivating.

BootcamperSo Phoebeleb, here's what I would do; say it out loud to a friend or family member and ask them to check on you, and if you don't workout, you pay them!

BarryI have been doing the bootcamp for 4 weeks and I have lost 4 inches, how long does it take to start losing pounds? Here's what I would do; say it out loud to a friend or family member and ask them to check on you, and if you don't workout, you pay them!

BootcamperI have been doing the bootcamp for 4 weeks and I have lost 4 inches, how long does it take to start losing pounds?

BarryYou always lose inches before lbs and you might even gain some lbs and still lose inches. So don't worry about it, your body is morphing into where it's suppose to be with the right foods and exercise. It takes different times for different people...patience and persistence.

BootcamperI have started a food journal which I HATE but it works, any ideas to keep the exercise up. I get really tired after a few days and then take a break for a couple of days and then it's hard to restart plus its been warm so I don't even want to go for a walk

BarryFat Burn online is so much easier than a written journal because it memorizes your meals for you. The thing is those breaks aren't helping you, you need to be consistent to gain energy from working out. Also are you getting enough of the right vitamins? The right amount of sleep?

BootcamperI am needing advise on staying motivated to exercise.

Barrywhat I suggest to people but you have to find what works for you; get a picture of yourself before you started working out and remember the goal; set small attainable goals, not huge ones that seem so far off.

BootcamperMy hubby and I leave for Mexico in a week and have been doing this for 4 weeks. We've been doing it right in the kitchen but have been at a 1.5 week standstill for weight loses. I know all the info about muscle weighing more than fat, but when should this plateau end??

BarryWell you're seeing results and now you just need patience. It doesn't always go as quickly as we want it to; but everyone gets frustrated with plateau's. Now your cheese mamma name worries me that there may be a dairy issue. But I want you to know this; 80 percent of your success of your weight loss is going to be about what you are eating; so tweak it up a bit maybe. If you are having any sugar or dairy, lose it and you'll lose the plateau. I've got over 150 questions in my queue right now and typing as fast as I can:-)

BootcamperIs the stomach and abs area the hardest areas to loss from after having a baby?

BarryWell after I had a baby.....hahahaha. Okay seriously though...well Brooke Lee/Miss Universe who you saw in the infomercial was also frustrated with those problem areas, but she succeeded and so can you. First of all, you might be watching those areas too closely and therefore its like watching grass grow. It's changing, trust me, just stop being so focused on it and do what you know is right. No matter what abs are the last to change in a body for most people.

BootcamperI am a college student who live on campus and don't have access to a kitchen or stove...how can I still eat properly?

BarryThat's a good question and there are lots of ways; first of all fruits and veggies raw can be good and there are plenty of actually decent on the go foods at 7/11 believe it or not. Also most grocery stores, we have Ralphs out here, have salad bars pull in and bon appetite.

BootcamperI get hungrier when I do exersise? Is that normal?

BarryYes, it's normal. You're burning calories and even blood sugar drops, the key is to eat the right foods and you'll be fine. If you're overweight (don't know if you are or not) you will definitely be hungry; as you are used to more food and training your body to get by on the right amount of the right foods.

BootcamperI'm new to Barry's workout and just love that I can do it at home in the amount of time it takes me to get to the gym. But I'm concerned that I'm not getting enough cardio. What supplemental cardio or other exercises do you recommend?

BarryIf your hearts not pumping from these workouts you're not pushing hard enough. Even our trained fitness models hearts were goin!

BootcamperI need clarification on how to enter my workout minutes into Fatburn.com.

BarryIn Fatburn, select the Barry's Bootcamp workout. Below that there's a box where you enter how many minutes you did.

BootcamperDo I enter length of the workout - 21 minutes - or actual amount of time moving - 14 minutes?

BarryActual amount of time you are moving.

BootcamperHow often should I use workout with the videos and can I combine two videos in one workout?

BarrySure go for it. The beauty of these workouts with resistance bands is that you can mix and match and use them daily as you like. Variety with the dvd's is not only good but suggested.

BootcamperAfter a person reaches their goal how often does a person do the workout per week to maintain...with the right diet of course?

BarryWorking out is about mental as much as physical. If I miss too many days I'm not the same. So you do it for positive mental well being as well as health. That said I have some news for ya; there is a maintenance level you reach after like 12 years of daily working out hard. But even then at least 3x's a week.

BootcamperBarry, do you think it's possible that the fatigue is from not eating enough calories? I've got a lot to loose and have been keeping it around 1000-1200 cal/day.

BarryWell it's not only calories, but yes low calorie is low energy. But the content. If you have a lot to lose you are used to more calories and it's a drop for your body but it will level out, trust me, I've seen this before and the end result is more energy and feeling and looking better.

BootcamperWhat do you think of low carb diets?

BarryLOVE them and live that way BUT...Low carb, not NO carb. There's a big difference. Greens, fruits, oatmeal, are NOT bad but everything is portion and calories at the end of the day and carbs for the first half of the day and not after 4-ish.

BootcamperOkay I consider myself to be overweight and still have a hard time doing the moderate exercises and still in the beginner mode after 5 weeks when will I be ready to do all the moderate and some advance?

BarryListen to your body, you'll know when. The weight will come off and you'll get stronger. Good for you for doing this for yourself. Keep taking steps forward and it'll all happen.

BootcamperIs the transformer suppose to be the same size as the one on the DVD? I want to get pregnant again after the first of the year...how long can a person do this workout during a pregnancy?

BarryYes, but when they're new they're not immediately as malleable. This means you have to inflate and deflate it several times to make it more flexible and able to grow. Now on to pregnancy, that's great and sure you can workout however, you don't want your heart rate going over 140 so get a monitor and NO PUSHUPS or ABS. Got it??? Also use the moderate versions not the hard, cause you shouldn't be jumping up and down. Especially the first trimester.

BootcamperOne major problem I have is meal ideas. I work full time and go to school at night, so I don't have a lot of time to prep meals. Any suggestions for healthy, quick meals? By quick, I mean making a sandwich or throwing a banana and peanut butter in my purse

BarryI tend to eat egg whites a LOT and love deli slices like turkey or Trader Joes has "just chicken" which I nibble at in a pinch but that might get messy in your purse. So maybe try that banana to hold you until you can get a bite, super markets have salad bars and not enough people take advantage.

BootcamperDo you believe in eating only when you are hungry instead of a strict diet?

BarryIf you are eating right you shouldn't be hungry. Sure now and then it happens but its a warning sign you've waiting too long and that's when your body stores fat and burns muscle. So you eat so you don't get hungry ...capiche?

BootcamperI've just started the program and have been on it for about 3 weeks. I consider myself in decent shape because I'm in the military and a cop, and bought the workout to help get me toned and stay in shape. I found that when doing the exercises it seems that my thighs are getting the most out of the workout and I don't feel sore anywhere else afterwards...I'm worried that I'm doing the exercises wrong or not performing them properly...am I doing it right or should I change what I'm doing?

BarryOf course I'm not there so I can see you and coach you one on one, but you might be you're taking it easy on the bands for upper? Are you on your toes for the pushups or knees?

BootcamperBarry, do you have any ideas on how stay motivated?

BarryHey there; well I'm getting a few motivated questions today; that's good. Results for me keep me motivated; I like feeling good and looking good; I make sure to check in with friends who are also on a mission and that helps. Have you ever done a contest with yourself? You get the new shoes if you workout 5 days a week and lose whatever amount of lbs by whatever date? Try it. Have fun.

Bootcamper Once a person is finished with the 4th week plan, do we just continue to do that same one every week?

BarryJust so people on the board know there are a lot of people who chose the name happy as their screen name, I love that but don't want you to think I'm playing fav'. Once you have finished with the 4 week plan begin again and keep pushing hard, change out bands as you can; at bootcamp people start over every month and have for years.

BootcamperBarry I just turned 60 and have had a problem with my heart, I want to get back into shape and bought your DVD's to help me. My muscles seem to have atrophy and I was wondering if I will be able to get "hard muscles" again if I continue to use the workouts?

BarryWell honestly; you can definitely tone up and sure, see some great change but with our ability to do less limits our ability to gain more muscle. I am REALLY proud of you for this because most people (hello dad!) give up at this age and don't exercise. You can be the best you can be. And 60 ain't that old, so you can actually still see some buff :-) go for it.

BootcamperMy question has not come up yet, but I would like to compliment the Dr. Gourmet website. I have tried several recipes, and they are really seasoned well. To the person with little time - I use some weekend time to cook, then freeze portions to pull out and take with me to work.

BarryI love Dr. Gourmet too…for people in this chat room if you haven't checked it out yet, you should. It's helpful and delicious.

BootcamperI have lost a total of 70lbs and still need to lose another 40, what do you recommend for cardio with your program?

BarryWay to go!! There's plenty of cardio in our workouts, your heart will be pumping promise! Please keep me posted, I want to hear your progress.

BootcamperWhen do you bring in the booty band workout?

BarryYou got a booty? What you waitin' for? Start now. RIGHT NOW!! :-) For people on the board who didn't opt to get the booty band workout you should check it out. It adds variety to the workouts and a firm booty to your bod.

BootcamperI bought the Barry's Bootcamp from the Infomercial, but I've noticed online that you have other DVDs. Where can I get those? I love your workouts and want to continue to use you, but I also get bored easily, so I like mixing up workouts every few weeks.

BarryThey're out of print. They used treadmills and various free weights; which is fine but wasn't practical for home and daily usage.

BootcamperBarry, is this the only time we can be LIVE with you on here or do you do this often? :)

BarryI'm lovin' it too; I will definitely be doing this again; we might do once a month maybe 2x's we'll see but yeah, I'll be back :-). You can also email me at anytime and believe it or not I answer every single email I get...its made for some very late nights but I love it.

BootcamperHow do you always make sure your abs are in?

BarryPull your belly button in to your spine...breathe...and you have to focus on it. Every workout the core is your center and focal point.

BootcamperIf you can't do all the one minute per exercise when you first start how long does it take to finally be able to do it normally and will you still see results?

BarryThanks for your patience…I thought I typed fast until today. Well that depends, just keep doing the best you can, you'll get better with time. Suggestion: no matter what, do the last ten seconds. It makes a huge difference that you are working out when it's over.

BootcamperHey Barry, PLEASE tell me your new workouts are ready for us to order?! I've been working out for with you for 3 weeks now and now I'm a Barrys Bootcamp FEEN.I need MORE! :)

BarryThey're available now! :) You can order on the phone at (877)914-9444 and they'll be available online tomorrow or Friday

BootcamperI've looked at the exercise just tried it with the kids in my day care and the pretend to do the same with a regular ball and jumping rope. It's interesting to see they want to participate. Do you have any selection for kids?

BarryI LOVE kids and this question. YES!! It's coming. Day 1 when we started I said lets do one for kids. So all in good time, promise.

BootcamperSometimes (like 5 days a week) I do my Fat Blaster and then take a hike or jog. Do I need to eat more on those days? I eat 1,500 a day. And am I killing my body by doing this?

BarryYou should use FatBurn because it can totally help you figure this out, you can enter what you're doing each day and it'll tell you whats up with your calories.

BootcamperYou have a class A product.

BarryThanks!!! Always nice to hear, really!

BootcamperHow often should I do the 1000 cal burn workout?

BarryLOL, how many times do you think you'll want to ? :-) I'd say like once or twice a week is plenty.

BootcamperI do use FatBurn. I lose almost a half a pound a day!

BarryThen you're on it. Fatburn will tell you when you're not eating enough calories.

BootcamperI know you helped Allison Sweeney lose weight from having her little one. Any suggestions?? She looks great!

BarryShe did the same thing everyone has to do; eat right, show up daily, and enjoy the process (which is a big part of it).

BootcamperWhat is the 1000 cal burn workout?

BarrySorry, this is a new workout that we just released last month; it kicks butt! You do 100 reps of each exercise. Yes, you read right. Ouch! It goes on sale as an individual workout Friday, this week!!! Yay!

BootcamperHow many minutes is 100 reps? LOL

BarryLOL. Well in class that depends. Some are faster than others. But if you keep at it and do it straight through, about 4 minutes.

BootcamperDo you suggest sticking to the recipes in the book that came with the workout or should I use the FatBurn.com?

BarryThe recipes in the book are a great start but you need to expand. You should go to our site and check out Dr. Gourmet

BootcamperI just received my first dvd Barry's Bootcamp and how often do I do the upper part and the lower body? Do you do upper one day and then lower the next day or do you do both every day?

BarryDid you not get your calendar? We suggest you alternate and the included calendar has the program lined up for your starting purposes.

BootcamperSo I can stick to low calories and work out 6 days a week and the workout fatigue goes away, right? Sorry I'm a pain.

BarryYou're not a pain...ok maybe a little ;-) j.k. Yes, stick to the low calories your fatigue will most likely go away, use FatBurn and Dr. Gourmet and you can't go wrong really.

BootcamperDo you believe in detoxicating your body?

BarrySure, but nothing crazy like fasting. There are good 1-3 day juice cleanses and colon cleansing supplements you can get at the health store...you can eat clean too which helps.

BootcamperYou are giving me a shot in the arm and re-motivating me! I hope you do more live chats. Is it a good sign if we are sore the day after doing the upper or lower body workouts? And is it good to be drenched after working out?

BarryWe will, we will, so glad you're enjoying this, so am I! Sore is always good and the wetter the better.

BootcamperHow do you prepare your egg whites in the morning? Scrambled? What kind of seasoning do you use on the egg whites?

BarryI am boring. Most times I'm okay with just scrambled egg whites however, adding avocado, or mushrooms or spinach add to them.

BootcamperI want to lose about 10 inches off of my waist for my wedding which is planned for June 2009. Is that a reasonable goal using your routine?

BarryHmmm. Weighing left. Okay getting calculator out...I need to know more. I have seen people totally change their bodies in less than six months...it takes a lot of dedication but it sounds like you have an awesome goal and yes, you CAN do it. don't cheat, eat right, show up daily to your workouts and use Dr. Gourmet and FatBurn, so you know you're doing it right in the kitchen.

BootcamperIs it possible to get the muscle definition and build like the people in the videos just by eating right and keeping with the program or does it require more such as working out with weights?

BarryIf you want that really buff look eventually sure get some free weights AND you can still do our workouts, using them, instead of the bands. But you should have an awesome body like the people in the infomercial did using this system.

BootcamperI don't remember a book or plan being in my box when I got it. If there was one, I probably misplaced it. Where do I go to find the four-week plan someone mentioned earlier?

BarryIf you email me tomorrow, I'll make sure that we get one out to you asap. That goes for anyone in the room who might have misplaced a calendar or guide or needs help using FatBurn or Dr. Gourmet. We want you to succeed!

BootcamperHi all! I am late. Okay I am eating dinner and chatting now. Hi Barry! When is the new DVD coming out?

BarryDinner, thank God I'm starving. Thanks Aubrey! How are you? The new dvd's are OUT, you can get them online friday or on the phones right now!

BootcamperI have seen the problem of obesity in kids and was pleased when my 16 year old son begged me to order your program him. But I have heard that strength training or muscle building can stunt a child's growth if started too soon. Have you heard and are there any special considerations for teens?

BarryUm. Never heard that and it's great for kids to exercise and it should be encouraged.

BootcamperWhat can I use to supplement fish? I cannot get near that stuff.

BarryLike anything in the way of chicken or tofu even depending on what type.

BootcamperI am one that needs caffeine in the morning. Is sugar free red bull bad for you?

BarryREAD CLOSE I LOVE SUGAR FREE RED BULL. JUST HAD ONE!!! However, if its your cup of coffee...i don't drink coffee...its ok in moderation to get you pumping.

BootcamperYou said you were going to post a blog to help me quite smoking... Where is it?

BarryI'm working on it. As an ex-smoker I want to help you best I can quit; its the best thing for you!

BootcamperUneven hips run in my family (I'm in my early 20's in pretty good shape) and I've noticed that certain exercises, like mountain climbers makes my hips crack. Should I not do those exercises? Do you have any modifications or advice for me?

BarryWell though I would check with your doctor, normally noises are no biggie but pain is...if it don't hurt you are probably okay but check. For anyone who finds any exercise too extreme, remember you can always follow Cat on the dvds doing the modified beginner level.

BootcamperWhat is your email address?

BarryGo to the website and use 'Ask Barry' and that gets right to me (its on the community page)

BootcamperTHANK GOD you said I could have my sugar free red bull.... Do you normally have 8oz or a 12 oz red bull? I noticed the calories are low but the sodium is high. Is there something I need to cut out to reduce my sodium in take?

BarryWell a red bull a day isn't so bad but we do need to watch sodium; I mean don't put salt on stuff and if you're eating like I eat which is mainly chicken, egg whites and greens and oatmeal and fruit, there's not much sodium to be found so I'm good to go on my red bull ;-). Oh and...12 ounce. Afterall, I only get one! Now I wanna ask you all a question and I have a prize for the person who gives me their success story, not ONLY in the physical but how the workouts and results have changed your life and in return; a free Barry's Bootcamp tee shirt to the best story!

BootcamperBarry, do you always eat healthy, or do you have a treat every once in while? If you do have a treat, what is it? I am still afraid to treat myself to any "bad" food. I am afraid I'll get fat again, even if it's only once a week.

BarryMy friends hate me. Yes, I do. I didn't always and it was progressive. But I was motivated by results. First I cut sugar, then I cut diet soda, then I removed dairy. I feel so much better that I don't miss any of it really... however there are some treats, thank heaven for food progress, that are great and fall under those guidelines so I can have a dairy free, sugar free piece of cake at M's cafe out here and enjoy :-)

BootcamperBarry, I' m getting ready to start my bootcamp in next week . What do you have to suggest to me so I won't get discouraged.

BarryWorkout rule number 1, there is no tomorrow. You have today, workout. We don't procrastinate…we take action! Number 2, use the community online here and chat with other campers; talk to Aubrey if she doesn't inspire you nothing will.

BootcamperWhat were Cat's steps to losing all of her weight beside throwing her out of the house? :: big grin

BarryHehehe…she did the first step and treated herself like a lady!!

BootcamperCUT DIET SODA?? Say it ain't so. I gave it up for lent last year and nearly lost my mind.

BarryI found for me that the carbonation was disturbing to my metabolism and it also made me hungry and I now drink a LOT more water. Also, Barry didn't like being dependent on them; I like not wanting them or needing them any more. But if you love them, moderation my friends.

BootcamperI noticed that this last week when I started drinking diet soda again instead of all the water that I am having a lot of trouble with "cravings" again.

BarryIt stimulates that "give me sugar" button. That is the problem here. So get rid of the diet sodas before they lead you back to the oreos maybe? :-)

BootcamperSuccess Story for Barry (Not a question): I have a lot of stress and anxiety in my life. I'm always on the go, whether its work, school, or doing something for my friends and family. Since I've started your workouts, I'm excited to put that time away for me. I have become much happier. I have less stress and go more with the flow. My anxiety attacks have stopped. I want to exercise. I want to make the time for exercise and myself.

BarryThat's awesome!!! Really great. Thanks for sharing that. More stories coming in so stand by.

Bootcamper I absolutely love your workouts. My biggest problem is having to get up at 4:30 am to get them done. I have talked about you with my friends and husband almost everyday and have told them how much I love your workouts. I have lost inches everywhere and felt great about my success so thank you.

BarryYou're barking up the right tree here, I get up at 3:30 Mon through Friday...but you're doing it and should be proud and I bet you feel great starting your day that way even though the chickens aren't up yet.

BootcamperI have a success story. I have tried every workout and fitness center workouts out there, and due to the complexity and getting bored easily I didn't come through with any of them. I saw your workout program on the infomercial and said that really looks like fun and something that I can actually do. My husband was already saying, "HERE WE GO AGAIN". Well this time I proved myself and him, I started the program the day I received it and starting seeing results within the first 2 weeks. I do the workout on my lunch hour everyday and don't dread the thought of working out!! I'm so motivated to keep going and be successful in my weight loss!! Thank you BARRY!!

BarryAwe, good for you and you can serve your husband some humble pie for dinner my treat :-) Way to go !!!

BootcamperFor me at this point I have just received your kit and I looked at it with the kids in the day care . I am getting ready to start my program on Monday September 8 and I have never been so determinated I want to stop doing for everybody else and I'm putting myself first for the first time in my life. I have reorganized the daycare schedule and every morning my first thing going to meet with Barry's bootcamp. Now I want to challenge myself til' Christmas and lose the 30 lbs I have extra. Should I do the exercise everyday or take a break in between? What kind of diet should I follow? I will give you my result for December 25th and even send you a picture of before and after.

BarryHere's some extra motivation for ya; if you do this, I wanna put you in my next infomercial! Yes, do it daily you don't need breaks on your mission; one day off is plenty. You have a very attainable goal and most of all a fantastic attitude!

BootcamperWow!!! I thought 4:30 was early. How do you get up that early and stay awake throughout the whole day. I am tired towards the end of the work day. I would love to attend one of your sessions. Do you ever travel out of state?

BarryWe are about to open a studio in New York, but I love my job and people out here so much that I stay in West Hollywood. I don't travel much but if you ever come out this way email me and I will give you some special attention in class!

BootcamperI use to do "The Firm" workouts. I had a baby in 07 and thought that would get my body back!! After not seeing much after 6 months, I thought I would give yours a try! I have lost 4 inches in 4 weeks!!! I wish I would have known about this sooner...I have a lot of energy and I have also started to lose the cravings!! You should have called this the "kick butt class"!!! Thanks for enjoying this enough to share your talent!!

BarryThank you, and so glad I was able to help you get your goals, that's a great story too, I love determination in action!

BootcamperSuccess story for Barry. I have three kids, a full time job, and I attend college online full time as well. I thought I would not be able to add working out to my already busy schedule. Not only have I lost weight but I also now have a lot more energy to get through my day. My kids love working out with me too because they have fun. This has definitely been a change not only for myself but my whole family.

BarryKeep the stories coming, they're great. LOVE this!!

BootcamperI like to have a cocktail now and then. What drinks do I need to stay away from?

BarryWell if its your first month doing this y'all, no drinking. After that, I'd suggest vodka (low calories and carbs) stay clear from the mixed drinks and shots also because you never know what you'll eat after a few shots hehehe.

BootcamperIf many of us attain our goals (I also want to lose about 35 lbs) then can we also be in your infomercials?

BarryYes yes yes!!! Post your success with pics on the site! There's a place where you can do that, post success stories and I look at them all.

BootcamperHow long does this chat last tonight?

BarryOh no, only 5 minutes left. But if you didn't get your question answered tonight I will do this again AND email it too, you'll get answers!

BootcamperAdmin question: will the chat be archived so we can read what we missed? I need to sign off and hate to miss anything. I'm enjoying meeting everyone and they are so inspirational

BarryWe will post it to the site shortly; community page. Chako runs the site and she rocks!!!!

BootcamperHI BARRY!! OMG. I want to add to the post baby weight stories. I just wanted to say that since I started your workout system in June 08 and have lost 13 pounds. Everyone at work wants to know HOW I do it. I'm so happy I got your DVD and you ARE inspirational no doubt.

BarryThank you and I love the baby weight stories. This good deed(motherhood) should never be punished! The weight comes off and your bodies come back and I love hearing it.

BootcamperWho won the free Barry t-shirt?

BarryDrum roll please...I know this seems like a set up but....its you ksport. ALL of you had great stories it was really hard to choose!!

BarryOk folks, they are telling me my time is up ... before I go I wanna thank you all for being so dedicated and motivating for me and each other. I will see you in emails on the site and in your living rooms of course.... as much as I inspire you I want you to know that you all inspire me as well. Have a great night and see you next time we do this. It'll be soon!

BootcamperBarry's Bootcamp is the best! I lost the first bit of weight by eating right and going to the gym, then hit a long plateau. Saw Barry on TV and ordered right away! The first week I saw results! My body was changing, fat started to melt away. After two weeks my ab muscles looked hot! I never had muscles like this. The gym did nothing for my abs. When I started Barry's Bootcamp I was stuck at 122 pounds and needed to lose the last 15 pounds. I did it in less than two months my body is sculpted, muscles are solid! My body fat % was 25%, now it's 18.8%. I am in better shape then before I had my kids! I have had seven kids (two sets of twins). I will be a bootcamper forever!

BarryOk I just HAD TO post Aubreys!
